Kenai Fjords is where the Harding Icefield — one of the four big ice caps in the United States — meets the Gulf of Alaska. Almost all of the park is water and ice: there are no roads beyond the Exit Glacier road, so most visitors see it from a tour boat out of Seward, and the rest walk up to Exit Glacier or climb the Harding Icefield trail. Everything is reached from Seward, 2.5 hours by road or 4 hours by train from Anchorage.

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The Exit Glacier Nature Center, its exhibits and the lower paved viewpoints are reachable with a short, mostly level walk.
- Boat tours are the easiest way to see the fjords for visitors who cannot hike; check boarding access with the operator.
- The Harding Icefield trail and most backcountry routes are steep and unsurfaced.
Visiting lightly
- Book with operators that follow the park's wildlife distance rules and do not chase whales.
- Pack out everything, including food scraps; the campground has no bins for bear safety.
- Use the free shuttle or car-pool to Exit Glacier in peak weeks to cut traffic and parking pressure.
- Treat the icefield as a research site: stay on the trail and do not walk onto the ice.

How much does it cost to enter Kenai Fjords National Park?
Nothing. There is no entrance fee and no ticket gate. You pay for what you do: a boat tour is about US$150–250 per person for a half day, a public-use cabin about US$75–100 a night, and the Exit Glacier campground is free.
What are the best hikes in Kenai Fjords National Park?
The Harding Icefield trail is the big one: 13 km round trip, about 1,000 m of climb, 6–8 hours, snow on the top into July. For something short, the Exit Glacier overlook trails from the nature centre take 1–2 hours on easy paths.
When is the best time to visit Kenai Fjords National Park?
June to August: all tours run, the Exit Glacier road is open, days are long and whales and seabirds are in. May and September are quieter but some tours stop and the weather is rougher.
Do I need a reservation for the boat tours?
Yes in practice for June–August. Book 2–4 weeks ahead, earlier for full-day fjord trips, and expect tours to be cancelled or shortened if the sea is rough.
Can I drive to the glaciers?
No. The only road in the park goes to Exit Glacier. Every other glacier, fjord and cabin is reached by tour boat, water taxi, kayak or floatplane from Seward.
Is one day enough?
One full day covers a boat tour and a quick look at Exit Glacier. Add a second day for the Harding Icefield trail or kayaking, and a third if you want a cabin night in the fjords.
