Tipperary is a small market town of about 5,400 people that gave its name to the county but was never its county town. The reasons to stop are the racecourse at Limerick Junction and the Glen of Aherlow a few km south. Most travellers pass through on the N24 or the Limerick Junction rail line and do better basing in Cashel or Cahir.

Getting around

The town itself is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. Limerick Junction station is 3 km northeast of the centre and the racecourse is a 5-minute walk from that station, so race days work without a car. For the Glen of Aherlow, Moor Abbey or the Galtee trailheads you need your own wheels: buses are sparse and there is no useful local service into the valley.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are rural roads after dark, patchy mobile signal and race-day drink driving. Standard advice: 112 or 999 for anything urgent.
  • Tipperary railway station has no facility to collect online tickets: buy at the station or print ahead.
  • Only two trains a day run from Tipperary station itself; most services use Limerick Junction, 3 km out of town.
  • There is no direct bus from Dublin: the route changes at Waterford and takes about five hours.
  • Mobile signal in and around town is patchy: Eir is weak, Vodafone 4G, Three 5G (as of 2025).
  • Rural roads are narrow and unlit; drive on the left and watch for walkers on the R663 and R664.
