Give Grand Island one night as an I-80 stop: the Stuhr Museum is the reason to get out of the car, and March cranes are the reason to plan ahead.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Grand Island sits on I-80 in South Central Nebraska, about 2.5 h west of Omaha and 1.5 h east of North Platte. It is a working plains city of roughly 51,000 people, not a resort town: the draw is the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer, the Platte River crane migration in March, and a bed between driving days. Two nights is enough if you add the Crane Trust and the Mormon Trail ruts; one night covers the museum.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is effectively required: sights sit 5–15 minutes apart and the museum is north of I-80 exit 312. I-80 runs just south of town (exits 312, 314, 318); US-30, US-34, US-281 and NE-2 all meet here. Local taxi and shuttle service exists but is limited — check hours before relying on it.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 50 min

I-80 west, about 45 min

Adds the Great Platte River Road Archway and a bigger restaurant choice.

Hastings

go

Door to door: About 40 min

US-34 west, about 35 min

Smaller town, easy half-day; pairs well with a museum morning.

North Platteovernight

Door to door: About 1.5 h

I-80 west, about 1 h 30 min

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep there instead.

Door to door: 2 h+

I-80 west past North Platte

Only worth it as part of a westbound drive, not a day trip from here.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

South Locust Street (I-80 exit 314)

The main motel strip: chains, diners and fuel within a few minutes' drive. Best for one night with a car.

Downtown / midtown

Closer to restaurants and the events centre; fewer rooms, quieter evenings.

Diers Avenue and West State Street

North-side chain hotels near US-281; handy if you are heading on to Hastings or Aurora.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime plains city; the real risks are highway driving, winter ice on I-80 and long empty stretches between towns. Keep fuel above a quarter tank and check road conditions before night driving.
  • Distances are long and winter weather closes I-80 in stretches: check Nebraska road conditions before driving.
  • The crane migration is a short, dated window in late February and March; book viewing and lodging weeks ahead.
  • Some attractions run seasonal hours only — confirm before you drive out.
  • Tipping is expected: 18–22% at sit-down restaurants, US$1–2 a drink.
