Eyam is a small Peak District village, pronounced "Eem", known for quarantining itself during the 1665–66 plague. The sights sit within a 10-minute walk of each other, so it works as a half-day stop on a Derbyshire Dales trip rather than a base. Buses are infrequent: two-hourly from Sheffield, twice daily from Bakewell, so plan around the timetable.

Safety

A quiet village with no real crime risk. The practical hazards are narrow lanes with no pavement, fast farm traffic, muddy field paths and weather that turns quickly on the moors.
  • Buses are sparse: Bus 65 from Sheffield about every two hours, Bus 275 from Sheffield to Bakewell twice daily Mon–Sat. Check times before you set out.
  • Eyam Hall and its craft centre open Mar–Nov, Wednesday to Sunday only; closed in winter.
  • Some plague sites are in working fields with livestock: keep to paths and gates.
  • Mobile signal is patchy; O2 had no 4G here as of 2024.
