Wrexham became a city in 2022 and is the largest town in north Wales, 45 min from Chester by bus and about 1 h 40 min from Birmingham by train. The draw is a tight, walkable centre with a medieval street plan, a Gothic church with a Yale grave, a National Trust house on the edge of town and a football club with a global following. Most visitors see it in a day; football fixtures and the Clwyd countryside justify a night.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable: St Giles to the bus station is about 5 min, and Wrexham General is a 10–15 min walk northwest of the centre. Wrexham Central sits by the retail park and is the handier station for the town. For Erddig, Minera and the country pubs you need a car, a taxi or bus 42 to Hightown. Taxis wait at the bus station and both stations.

Watch out

Safety

Wrexham is a normal British city: the centre is safe by day and busy at night, and the usual advice applies after dark around High Street and Town Hill. The real risks are weather and logistics — rain, early rural buses and match-day crowds.
  • Wrexham County Borough Museum is closed for redevelopment until 2026, when it is due to reopen with the Football Museum for Wales: check before you plan around it.
  • Bersham Ironworks has been closed for years: check before travelling.
  • Match days fill the town: the Racecourse holds about 13,000 and hotel rooms and pubs near Mold Road get busy.
  • Some pubs in town are cash only (Golden Lion, Saith Seren): carry a few pounds.
  • Erddig house opens in the afternoon only (about 12:30–15:30) from April to October; the garden opens earlier. Check winter opening.
  • Rural bus services thin out in the evening; the last bus back from Llangollen or Ruthin is early.
