Diss is a small market town on the Norfolk–Suffolk border, 1 h 40 min by train from London Liverpool Street and about 20 min from Norwich. The draw is the 6-acre Mere beside the main street, a Friday market and a compact centre you can walk in an hour. It works as a stop between London and Norwich, or as a low-cost base for the Waveney valley.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in about 15 minutes end to end. Buses serve Norwich and nearby villages but rural routes are slow; check times before relying on them. Regional Cycle Route 30 passes the south edge of town, and the quiet lanes suit cycling with a map.

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real issues are unlit lanes after dark, uneven pavements around the Mere and drinking too much at the Friday market pubs. Standard UK precautions are enough.
  • The station is 1½ miles from the centre: taxis are usually waiting, but book one if you arrive late.
  • Rural buses run a few times a day at best: check the last return before you go out.
  • Many kitchens stop serving by 21:00 and some pubs close earlier on Sundays.
