Huejotzingo is a small colonial town 3 km from Puebla's airport and about 40 minutes from Puebla city. Its Franciscan monastery, begun in 1524, is a UNESCO-listed site and the reason most travellers stop. Add the cider houses and the February carnival re-enactment, and one night is enough; without the carnival, a half-day from Puebla covers it.

The colonial centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. The town spreads out toward the highway, so use taxis, peseros/combis or ride-hail apps for anything beyond the centre; taxis are plentiful and hotel desks will call one.

Watch out

Safety

Huejotzingo is a working small city, not a resort: stick to the centre and main roads at night, use taxis after dark, and keep normal big-city precautions with cash and phones. The main practical risks are traffic on the highway and pickpockets in a crowded carnival crowd.
  • The main church has been closed for renovation after earthquake damage — check locally before you go for the church interior; the Museum of Evangelization and monastery tours have been open.
  • Carnival weekend (February) fills every hotel and the streets; book weeks ahead or avoid those dates.
  • Some budget hotels are cash only — carry pesos.
  • Afternoon rain from May to September; plan indoor sights for the afternoon.
