Berwick-upon-Tweed sits two miles south of the Scottish border on the north bank of the Tweed, and it is the last sizeable town on the East Coast Main Line before Scotland. Its draw is compact and cheap: 400-year-old artillery walls you can walk for free, a riverside of three bridges, and a walkable old town of 18th and 19th century streets. Most travellers give it one night on the way between Newcastle and Edinburgh, or two nights as a base for Lindisfarne, the Border coast and the Tweed valley. It is a town, not a resort: the beach is at Spittal, the big houses and castles are a drive away, and you need your own wheels for almost everything outside the walls.

Getting around

The walled town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes, and the walls, riverside, bridges and station are all on foot. For Lindisfarne, the Border coast, Paxton House, Norham Castle or Duns you need a car, a taxi or a bus; local buses run to Eyemouth, Galashiels and Wooler but not often. Taxis wait at the station and in the town centre.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are the tide on the Lindisfarne causeway, fast traffic on the A1, and unlit cliff paths after dark.
  • Berwick Barracks and its museum are closed until 2028: check before you plan around them.
  • The bus to Lindisfarne runs only on some days and its times follow the tides: check the day before.
  • Coastal wind and rain arrive fast even in summer: bring a waterproof layer.
  • The A1 north of Newcastle is only partly dual carriageway; allow extra time by road.
  • The border itself is a layby on the A1 with fast traffic: not worth stopping for a photo.
