Lapu-Lapu covers most of Mactan Island and holds Metro Cebu's only airport, so almost every visitor to Cebu passes through it. The resorts and dive sites sit on the east and south coasts, 20–40 min from the terminal; downtown is a working city with the market, malls and the immigration office. Treat it as a beach base with an airport attached, and cross to Cebu City only when you have a reason.

Getting around

Tricycles and multicabs cover short hops; taxis are metered but drivers often quote a flat fare to tourists, so agree the price or insist on the meter. Jeepneys run 24 h on fixed routes for around ₱8–15. Two bridges link Mactan to Mandaue, and the CCLEX toll bridge links Córdova to Cebu City. Allow 40–60 min by road to Cebu City in traffic.

Watch out

Safety

Lapu-Lapu is generally safe for tourists, but petty theft happens around the market and transport hubs, and taxi overcharging is the most common complaint. Use a metered taxi or app, keep bags zipped in crowds, and treat the sea with respect: currents and urchins cause more trouble than crime.
  • Taxis from the airport often refuse the meter: use the MyBus, a ride-hailing app, or agree a fare before you get in.
  • The airport is the region's main gateway, so build a buffer before a domestic flight — check-in queues peak early morning and late evening.
  • Some beaches are private resort property; day passes are sold but can be full in high season — call ahead.
  • Sun and salt are the real risks: reef cuts and sea urchins on shore entries, and strong currents at some dive sites.
