Dibba Al-Baya is a small Omani border town of about 5,000 people at the southeast corner of the Musandam exclave, facing the Emirati Dibba conurbation of Fujairah and Sharjah. There is nothing to see in town; the reason to come is the water — protected reefs, dhow cruises, diving and deep-water soloing — plus the Zighy Bay resort. Most visitors cross from the UAE for a day or a night, and the border rules, not the distance, decide the trip.

Getting around

The town is compact and everything sits inside the Dibba ring road, so walking covers it. For Zighy Bay, dive sites and the mountain tracks you need a 4x4 or a tour operator's vehicle; taxis are limited and there is no useful public transport. The gravel road to Zighy Bay and the dirt track across to Khasab are rough — do not attempt the Khasab crossing with a single 4WD, as there is no help for stranded drivers.

Watch out

Safety

The town is quiet and low-crime; the real risks are border paperwork, summer heat, rough unmarked mountain tracks and sea conditions on the crossing to Khasab. Keep your passport and UAE visa or residence card on you at all times near the border.
  • Non-GCC UAE residents crossing at Dibba must send a confirmed hotel or dhow booking to the UAE authorities at least 48 h before the border post and show the written confirmation to UAE border police, or exit from the UAE can be refused — check this with the UAE authorities before you travel, as the rule may have changed.
  • Carry your original passport and UAE visa or residence card: copies are not enough at the checkpoint.
  • The dirt track across the peninsula to Khasab is remote with no facilities for stranded drivers; do not attempt it with a single 4WD, and avoid it unless conditions and support are verified.
  • Alcohol is served only in licensed hotels and restaurants, not in ordinary eateries.
  • Summer heat from June to September makes midday hiking and climbing unsafe.
