Orange City is a small Volusia County town on the St. Johns River side of I-4, best known as the gateway to Blue Spring State Park, where manatees gather in winter. The historic district is a short walk of 19th-century buildings; everything else is a drive. One night covers it, two if you want a full Blue Spring morning plus a river cruise.

Getting around

You need a car. Volusia Avenue (US 17/92) is the main north–south road and gets congested; Graves Avenue runs east to the historic district, and FL-472 is the nearest I-4 exit. There is no useful local bus for visitors.

Low street crime for a US town of this size; the real risks are heat, summer storms, highway traffic on Volusia Avenue and alligators or snakes near any fresh water — keep your distance and do not swim outside marked areas.
  • Blue Spring State Park closes to visitors when the manatee refuge fills in winter — arrive at opening, and check the park's status before driving out.
  • Summer afternoons bring heavy thunderstorms; plan outdoor time before noon.
