Yekaterinburg is Russia's fourth-largest city and the last stop most Trans-Siberian travellers make before the flat run to Novosibirsk. It sits on the Asian side of the Urals, founded in 1723 as a metalworks, and its draw is architecture plus the Romanov execution site. Two days covers the centre on foot and one out-of-town run.
