Red Bluff

Stop for one night on I-5, not a destination: see the Ide Adobe, walk the river, eat Mexican on Main, leave by morning.

Red Bluff is a small Sacramento Valley town on Interstate 5, 24 mi (39 km) south of Redding and about 130 mi (210 km) north of Sacramento. It works as a cheap, quiet overnight break on the long I-5 run, with a state historic park, a riverfront and a downtown of a few blocks. Two nights is the ceiling; most travellers pass through.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights sit 1–3 mi apart and sidewalks are patchy. TRAX city buses run two routes on weekdays only, roughly 06:30–18:30, with a low flat fare; no service on major holidays. Downtown is walkable in about 15 minutes end to end.

Antelope Blvd / I-5 exits

Chain motels at the freeway; easiest with a car and bags.

Downtown Main Street

Walkable to restaurants and the river; fewer rooms, older buildings.

Sale Lane / south side

Quieter motels near the river and the Discovery Center.

Watch out

Safety

Low street crime for a US town of this size; the real risks are I-5 traffic, winter tule fog and summer heat. Keep valuables out of sight in parked cars at trailheads.
  • Summer afternoons regularly top 35 °C (95 °F); carry water and do the Adobe before noon.
  • Winter tule fog can cut I-5 visibility to a few hundred feet: slow down or wait it out.
  • Greyhound no longer stops in Red Bluff; the nearest bus station is in Redding.
  • Amtrak trains do not serve the town — only a connecting Thruway bus to Sacramento.
