  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Maitland is a small, wealthy Orange County suburb north of Orlando, about 20,000 people, with a compact walkable core of lakes, parks and two good museums. It is not a theme-park base and has no nightlife district. Come for a half day from Orlando or Winter Park, or sleep here if you want a calm, cheaper bed with a SunRail train into the city.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical default: sights and hotels are spread along US-17/92 and Maitland Blvd, and sidewalks are patchy outside the core. The walkable centre (Lake Lily, the museums, a few restaurants) is a few blocks. SunRail commuter trains stop at Maitland station and run south to Winter Park and Orlando and north to Altamonte Springs and Sanford on weekdays; Lynx bus 102 also links to Orlando. Both take just over 30 min to downtown Orlando. SunRail does not run on Sundays and has limited Saturday service — check the timetable.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 20–30 min

SunRail from Maitland station, or a 10–15 min drive south on US-17/92

Park Avenue shops, the Morse Museum and the boat tour; pairs naturally with Maitland.

Door to door: About 30–45 min

SunRail from Maitland station, or Lynx bus 102, or a 20–30 min drive

Downtown and the theme-park corridor; train is easiest if you avoid rush hour.

Door to door: About 40–60 min

Car via I-4 west, about 30–40 min without traffic

Doable as a day, but a Maitland base adds a long drive each way; stay nearer the parks instead.

Door to door: About 45–55 min

SunRail north to Sanford, about 40 min

Historic riverfront downtown; check the SunRail timetable as service is weekday-heavy.

Door to door: About 45–60 min

Car via I-4 west, about 35–45 min

A planned town to stroll and eat; a long way for a short visit from Maitland.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown Maitland / Lake Lily

Walkable core near US-17/92 and the SunRail station; a few inns and B&Bs, closest to the museums and park.

Maitland Center / North Lake Destiny

Business-district hotels west of I-4; free parking, chain rooms, but you need a car for everything.

Near the SunRail station (801 N Orlando Ave)

Best if you plan to train to Winter Park or Orlando; limited lodging within walking distance.

Watch out

Safety

One of the safest parts of the Orlando metro; the real risks are traffic on US-17/92, summer heat and storms, and hurricane season late Aug–Oct.
  • US-17/92 and Maitland Blvd are busy at rush hour with frequent signals; allow extra time.
  • SunRail is a weekday commuter line: no Sunday service and limited Saturday trains — check before relying on it.
  • Summer heat and near-daily afternoon thunderstorms Jun–Sep; plan indoor stops midday.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov, peaking late Aug–Oct; watch forecasts if travelling then.
  • Most of Greater Orlando needs a car; rideshare from Maitland to the parks is long and costly.
