Ocean City is a 10-mile barrier-island beach resort on Maryland's Atlantic coast, about 3 hours by car from both Baltimore and Washington, DC. The boardwalk and inlet anchor the south end; high-rise hotels and the convention centre line Coastal Highway to the north. It is a summer town: peak season runs from Memorial Day weekend in late May to Labor Day in early September, and summer weekends can draw over 300,000 visitors. Two to three nights covers the beach, boardwalk and one day trip; a car makes the surrounding Eastern Shore reachable.

Getting around

The Coastal Highway Beach Bus runs the full length of the island between the South Division Street Transit Center and the 144th Street Transit Center; a day pass is $3 ($1.50 reduced). The Boardwalk Tram covers the boardwalk between the inlet and 27th Street. Driving is slow in summer — Coastal Highway jams — so park once and use the bus, tram, bike or your feet. Cross only at crosswalks; jaywalking is prohibited.

Watch out

Safety

The beach is lifeguarded from late April to October — swim near a guard and mind rip currents. The town is busy but generally safe; the main issues are summer traffic, alcohol-fuelled crowds in June and August, and leaving valuables on the sand.
  • Summer weekend traffic on Coastal Highway and the Route 50 bridge can add an hour to short drives.
  • Parking is scarce and metered; the Inlet lot charges by the hour in season and uses pay-by-plate.
  • Hurricanes and tropical storms affect the area roughly once or twice a decade — check forecasts in Aug–Oct.
  • June brings Senior Week, when recently graduated high-school groups fill the town; expect noise and busy bars.
  • Some cabs use zone fares — ask for the meter or agree the price before you get in.
