Morelia is the capital of Michoacán and a UNESCO World Heritage colonial centre at about 1,920 m, roughly 4 h by bus from Mexico City. Almost everything worth seeing sits inside the historic centre, so two nights covers the city and a third night buys you a day trip. It is a university and government town, so it feels like a working city rather than a resort.

Getting around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 25 minutes. Combis (small vans) run frequent routes across the city and cost a few pesos; pay the driver on board and ring the buzzer for the next corner. Taxis work on zone fares — agree the price before you get in. Uber operates in Morelia. Driving is possible but parking in the centre is scarce.

Watch out

Safety

The historic centre is busy and generally safe on foot by day and early evening. Use registered taxis or app rides after dark, keep to lit streets, and treat the wider state cautiously: check current local advice before driving rural roads.
  • Agree taxi fares before boarding; there are no meters in the usual sense.
  • Drivers use horns constantly, including at blind intersections — light sleepers should avoid street-facing rooms.
  • Afternoon rain from June to September can soak the centre; carry a light shell.
  • Foreign currency is rarely accepted; carry pesos for markets and budget spots.
