Milot

Half a day is enough to see Sans-Souci Palace and the Citadelle from Cap-Haïtien: go as a day trip, not an overnight.

Milot is a small town 20 km south of Cap-Haïtien, the gateway to two UNESCO World Heritage sites: the ruined Sans-Souci Palace and the massive Citadelle Laferrière. Most travellers visit on a half-day trip from Cap-Haïtien. The town itself has little else, but the fort and palace are among Haiti's most important historical landmarks.

Watch out

Safety

Haiti has a volatile security situation. Milot is in the north, which is generally calmer than Port-au-Prince, but check your government's travel advice. Petty theft can occur; keep valuables out of sight. The Citadelle trail is physically demanding.
  • The Citadelle trail is steep and exposed: bring water, sun protection and sturdy shoes.
  • Guides at the Citadelle are not official but are customary; agree on a price before starting.
  • No ATMs in Milot; bring cash (gourdes or US dollars) from Cap-Haïtien.
  • Check your government travel advice before planning any trip to Haiti.
