Jamestown is a Gold Rush town of about 3,400 people on Highway 108 in Tuolumne County, founded in 1848 after gold was found in Woods Creek a mile south. Its Main Street still reads as a 19th-century mining town, and Railtown 1897 State Historic Park keeps the original Sierra Railway depot, roundhouse and shops working. Most travellers see it in three to four hours between Sonora and Yosemite, or sleep one night in a historic hotel.

Getting around

Downtown Jamestown is walkable: Main Street, Rocca Park and Railtown 1897 (about 0.5 mi south along 5th Ave, which becomes Reservoir Rd) are all on foot. A car is needed for the Highway 108 strip west of downtown, Woods Crossing about 1 mi west, and everything else in Tuolumne County. YARTS 'Sonora–Hwy 120' stops at Rocca Park on Main St and runs to Sonora, Groveland and Yosemite Valley; Tuolumne County Transit Route 3 links Jamestown to Sonora and Columbia, with transfers in Sonora.

Safety

Jamestown is a small, low-crime town and Main Street is safe on foot by day. The real risks are summer heat, deer and cyclists on Highway 108/49, and unlit rural roads at night: drive the speed limit and carry water.
  • Summer afternoons in the foothills regularly pass 35 °C: carry water and walk Main Street early or late.
  • Highway 108 east of Sonora climbs into the Sierra; snow and chain controls are possible Nov–Apr — check road conditions before driving to Pinecrest or Sonora Pass.
  • Steam train rides at Railtown 1897 run on summer weekends and a few special dates only: check the schedule before you build a day around one.
  • Cell coverage is patchy in the canyons east of town.
  • Small-town kitchens close early; last seating is often before 21:00.
