Goiás — the old capital of Goiás state, called Goiás Velho by some but City of Goiás is the polite name — is a small colonial town of about 25,000 people, 320 km west of Brasília on BR-070 and 139 km from Goiânia. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site (2001) and can be covered on foot in half a day. Most travellers reach it by car or bus, as a one-night stop between Brasília and Goiânia or as a day trip from Goiânia.
