Thurles is a market town of about 8,200 people in County Tipperary, 75 minutes by train from Dublin and 5 km from the M8. It is the birthplace of the Gaelic Athletic Association, founded at Hayes Hotel in 1884, and Semple Stadium is the second-largest GAA ground in Ireland. The town itself is compact and walkable; the main sight, Holy Cross Abbey, is 6 km southwest and needs wheels. Most travellers come for a match, a race meeting or as a rail stop between Dublin and Cork.

Thurles is a small, safe town; the real risks are wet roads, uneven pavements after a night out and match-day crowds. Keep to lit streets around Liberty Square at closing time.
