Kittilä

Base in Levi (Sirkka) for 3–4 nights, not the village: the airport is 5 km (3.1 mi) from Kittilä centre but 15 km (9.3 mi) from the slopes and beds.

Kittilä is a municipality the size of a small country with 6,500 residents, one airport and two ski resorts inside it. Almost everything travellers book — hotels, restaurants, ski hire, nightlife — sits in Levi (Sirkka) or on the Ylläs side, not in the administrative village. Come in winter for skiing and auroras, in early summer for midnight sun and hiking in Pallas-Yllästunturi.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Nordic countries ↗Decide light or dark before anything else: summer trips (June–August) and aurora trips (September–March in the Arctic) need different countries, clothes and bases.
  • Nordic countries ↗Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and the Faroes sell stronger alcohol only in state shops with short hours; buy before evening and before Sundays and holidays.
  • Finland ↗Finland is in the EU and the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border.
  • Finland ↗The land border with Russia is closed to travellers; do not plan a route across it.
  • Finland ↗Everyman's rights let you walk, camp for a night and pick berries on most land, but not near homes, and not to make fires without permission.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Distances are long and buses are thin outside ski season. A rental car is the practical choice; book it with the flight, as airport stock runs out in peak weeks. In season, shuttle services run from KTT to Levi and to Ylläsjärvi/Äkäslompolo, often by advance booking. Taxis are app-bookable and can be priced as a fixed fare when you give the address.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Levi

go

Door to door: 20–30 min

Airport shuttle or car, 15 km (9.3 mi)

The resort itself: slopes, spa, restaurants. Most visitors sleep here rather than in Kittilä village.

Ylläs and Äkäslompolo

go

Door to door: 1–1.5 h

Car or seasonal airport bus via Kolari road

Second fell resort; quieter than Levi, better for cross-country skiing.

Muonio

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Car north-west on road 79

Useful as a stop towards Pallas; little reason to go and return the same day.

Kolari

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Car south on road 79, 60 km (37 mi)

Railhead with twice-weekly trains; a transfer point, not a day out.

Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park

go

Door to door: 40 min–1 h

Car to the Aakenustunturi or Rauhala trailheads

Marked trails and ski tracks; the Pallastunturi–Hetta route is Finland's oldest marked hiking trail.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Levi (Sirkka)

Where nearly all beds, restaurants and ski lifts are. 15 km (9.3 mi) from the airport; walkable core, but many cabins need a car or shuttle.

Kittilä village centre

Quiet, cheap, near the church and the airport. Only worth it if you have a car or an early flight.

Rauhala / Jerisjärvi

West side, near Pallas-Yllästunturi. Cottages and activity providers; 40+ km from Levi.

Lainio

Snow village and cabins, 30 km (19 mi) from the centre, on the road towards Ylläs.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are cold, darkness and distance: −30 °C (−22 °F) is possible Dec–Feb, daylight is only a few hours around midwinter, and help is far away on backcountry trails. Tell someone your route.
  • Winter temperatures can fall below −30 °C (−22 °F): layers, face cover, and no long walks alone at night.
  • Off-season (May, Nov) many restaurants, lifts and activities close and buses stop running.
  • Aurora and husky trips sell out in peak weeks — book before you fly.
  • Alcohol is sold only in state Alko shops and licensed bars; village shops close early.
  • Reindeer on the roads at dusk: drive slowly.
