TuraŭТураў

Half a day is enough: see the medieval church ruins and the Cyril monument, then move on to Pinsk or Gomel.

Turaŭ (Turov) was a major East Slavic centre in the Middle Ages, home to influential bishops and a vast duchy. The 1230 earthquake and later invasions left little above ground, but excavations uncovered the foundations of a 12th-century church. Today it is a quiet town of about 3,000 people, worth a short stop for history buffs travelling between Gomel and Pinsk.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Belarus ↗Check your own government travel advice for Belarus before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Belarus ↗Land crossings from Poland, Lithuania and Latvia open and close on short notice; confirm the crossing on the day with that country's border guard.
  • Belarus ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Belarus before you rely on it.

Safety

Belarus is under authoritarian rule; follow your government's travel advice. Turaŭ itself is quiet and low-crime, but avoid political discussions or photography of official buildings.
  • Very few services: bring cash (BYN) as cards may not be accepted.
  • No tourist information office on site; check the official website before going.
  • The church ruins are an open excavation site – no shelter, no facilities.
