Cala Ratjada is a small resort town on a rocky peninsula at the northeast tip of Mallorca, about 6,500 residents and a summer population many times that. It is a base for beaches (Son Moll, Cala Gat, Cala Agulla), the Capdepera castle and lighthouse, and the Cuevas d'Artà. Most visitors come for a week of sun; as a stop on a Mallorca road trip it earns two or three nights.

Getting around

The town is walkable: port to Son Moll about 10 min, port to Cala Agulla about 20 min. Local TIB buses link the beaches, Capdepera, Artà and Cala Millor; the 411e express runs to Palma in about 90 min. Taxis wait at Plaça des Pins. A car helps for Cuevas d'Artà, Artà and the golf courses.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a resort town; the real issues are summer heat, sea conditions on the north-facing Cala Agulla, and pickpocketing or drink spiking in late-night bar streets. Swim between flags and keep valuables out of beach bags.
  • Summer heat and no shade on the rocky headland paths; carry water.
  • Buses stop at Cala Agulla on the edge of town, about 1 km from the port area — check which stop is nearest your hotel.
  • Some hotels sit on streets with late bar noise; ask for a room away from the road.
  • Many restaurants and hotels close from November to March; check before booking a winter trip.
  • Parking near the port and Cala Agulla fills by mid-morning in July and August.
