Come for 2 nights in Jun–Aug: walk the old town and harbour, take one boat or hike day, and keep a spare day for weather that cancels boats.
Ísafjörður is the largest town in the Westfjords and the practical base for the region: a small walkable centre, a working harbour, and the ferry, bus and flight links that make the fjords reachable without a car. Two nights covers the town and one excursion; three or four lets you add Dynjandi, the bird cliffs or a hike. Everything depends on the season: buses and most tours run 1 June to 31 August, and road 60 over Þorskafjarðarheiði is a summer route only.

Getting around
The centre is small and walkable; you do not need a car for the town itself. For Dynjandi, the cliffs and other fjord villages you need a car, a tour, or the summer bus network. A bike rental operates in town. Hnífsdalur is about 5 km north on a paved walking and cycling path beside road 61.

Watch out
Safety
- Summer-only transport: buses from Reykjavík and Akureyri and most tours run 1 Jun–31 Aug; outside that window check what is actually running before you book.
- Road 60 over Þorskafjarðarheiði is the shortest summer approach from Reykjavík but is not passable in winter; the year-round route is longer, via road 61.
- Weather cancels boats and flights at short notice in the fjords; build one spare day into any 3-night plan.
- Fuel, food and alcohol cost more here than in Reykjavík; the state liquor store has limited hours, so buy before you arrive if you want wine with dinner.
- Gravel shoulders and single-lane bridges on the fjord roads: drive with headlights on and expect sheep.
