Stuttgart is the capital of Baden-Württemberg and the home base of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, spread over hills and valleys with vineyards inside the city limits. The centre is compact and walkable, but the car museums sit in outer districts, so you will use the S-Bahn and Stadtbahn most days. Two nights covers the essentials; three if you add a day trip.

Getting around

VVS runs one fare system across S-Bahn, Stadtbahn (U-Bahn) and buses; the city is zone 1. Most lines pass through Hauptbahnhof, so plan changes there. Buy a day ticket if you make three or more trips. The centre itself is walkable via Königstraße.

Watch out

Safety

Stuttgart is a low-crime city by German standards; the real annoyances are pickpockets around Hauptbahnhof and Königstraße, drunk crowds during Canstatter Wasen and Oktoberfest season, and steep staircases after rain.
  • Hauptbahnhof is a construction site for Stuttgart 21; allow extra time to reach platforms.
  • No S-Bahn or U-Bahn service to the airport between about 01:00 and 05:00 on weekdays (Mon–Fri); night buses run only on weekends.
  • Weekday services stop around 01:00; S-Bahn runs hourly all night on weekends.
  • Stuttgart is a low-emission zone: your car needs a green sticker, and parking in the centre is scarce and expensive.
  • Rush-hour traffic jams are common; use park-and-ride at Degerloch Albstraße or Österfeld if you drive.
