Ürgüp is the old Cappadocian market town 8 km east of Göreme, with the densest cluster of cave and mansion hotels in the region and a centre that does not empty out at dusk. Sights are spread across valleys on both sides, so you need wheels or dolmuşes by day. Balloon flights lift off over the same valleys and most operators collect from Ürgüp hotels.

Getting around

The centre is walkable; valleys are not. Dolmuşes run frequently between Ürgüp, Göreme, Nevşehir and Avanos from the central bus station. For Three Beauties, Devrent, Pancarlık and Sobesos, use a rental car, a taxi or a guided day tour — walking distances on the D302 and D300 are exposed and have no pavement.

Watch out

Safety

Ürgüp is a low-crime tourist town and walking the centre at night is normal. The real risks are unlit valley trails, unlicensed balloon or ATV operators, and bar or tour bills with no posted price — agree the total before you commit.
  • Agents on the square sell balloon, tour and ATV trips; compare two or three offices and confirm the balloon operator and cancellation policy in writing.
  • Places labelled 'Tourist Information' are tour sales desks, not official information offices.
  • Pottery kebap (testi kebap) is sometimes prepared well in advance; order it where you can see it being cracked open.
  • Cave rooms are cool and can be damp; ask for a room with a window and check the heating in winter.
  • Valley trails are unmarked and slippery after rain; go with a guide or a GPS track and start early.
