Iznik is ancient Nicaea, a small market town at the east end of Lake Iznik where two ecumenical councils met and where the Roman street grid and Hadrian's walls still stand. Everything inside the walls is level and walkable in a few hours. Most travellers reach it by dolmuş from Yalova or Bursa, see the gates, Hagia Sophia and the tile shops, eat lake fish, and leave. It rewards one night far more than a rushed afternoon.

Getting around

Walk: the town is level and each of the four gates is roughly 1 km from the central square, so the walls, Hagia Sophia, the Green Mosque and the museum are all on foot. Taxis wait near Hagia Sophia for the outlying sights (Roman quarry, catacombs, obelisk). No local bus network is useful inside town.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime market town; the real issues are traffic on the D-150 lake road, unshaded summer heat, and unmarked taxi fares to the outlying ruins: agree the price first.
  • The inter-city buses from Istanbul do not serve Iznik: go via Yalova or Bursa and change to a dolmuş.
  • Some sights are closed for restoration or for security (the museum in the Nilüfer Hatun imaret, the Roman catacombs): ask at the museum before planning around them.
  • Antique tiles from the 1490–1620 (≈ US$40) period cannot legally be exported; buy modern workshop pieces instead.
  • There is no official tourist information office; the outlets near the square sell tours and bus tickets.
  • Summer afternoons are hot and shade inside the walls is limited: walk the walls early or late.
