Charleville-Mézières is the Ardennes capital and Rimbaud's birthplace, 1 h 40 min from Paris by TGV via Reims. The centre is small and walkable: Place Ducale, two Rimbaud museums and a Gothic basilica. Most travellers use it as a night between Reims and Sedan, or as a base for the Meuse valley. In August of odd years the puppet festival triples the population and beds sell out.

Getting around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 25 minutes. TAC buses run 17 lines across the city (single fare €1.40); RDTA coaches reach the rest of the Ardennes. The Trans-Ardennes greenway along the Meuse is the best way to see the valley by bike.

Safety

A calm, small city; the main risks are pickpockets around the station and festival crowds, and icy pavements in winter. Standard French emergency numbers apply.
  • During the puppet festival and the Cabaret Vert, the population can triple: book beds and expect traffic jams.
  • Some museums close Mondays and public holidays; the €4 (≈ US$5) combined ticket covers the Rimbaud museum, Maison des Ailleurs and the Ardennes museum for two days.
  • English is patchy outside hotels and museums; a few French phrases help.
