Elyria is the county seat of Lorain County, sitting at the forks of the Black River about 23 mi (37 km) southwest of Cleveland. It is a residential, suburban bedroom community for Cleveland: a small downtown, a college arts venue, and a handful of chain hotels near the turnpike. Most travellers use it as a one-night stop or a cheaper bed for a Cleveland trip, not as a destination in itself.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights and hotels are spread along OH-57, US-20 and the I-80/I-90 turnpike. Lorain County Transit runs an on-demand service (ViaLC) rather than fixed routes, so plan around it or use taxis and rideshare. Amtrak's Elyria station (ELY) on East River Street has an enclosed waiting area with restrooms.
