L'Escala is a working fishing town on the southern side of the Gulf of Roses, in Alt Empordà on the Costa Brava. It has no train station, so you arrive by bus or car. Its draw is a mix of sandy beaches and rocky coves, the Greek and Roman ruins of Empúries just north of town, and salt-cured anchovies that have been made here for generations. Two or three nights covers the town, the ruins and Cala Montgó without rushing.

Getting around
The town centre is walkable end to end. In summer a small tourist train (Carrilet) runs along the seafront linking the beaches, about €2 a trip. Bikes work well on the seafront lanes. A car helps for Cala Montgó, Empúries and the Empordà villages.

Watch out
Safety
- No train station: nearest railheads are Flaçà and Camallera, then a bus — weekend service is thin, so check times.
- The Rec del Molí beach has a signposted stretch near the river mouth that is not suitable for swimming.
- August fills the town and parking; book beds and restaurant tables ahead.
- Tramuntana winds can close coves and dive boats — check conditions before booking water activities.
