  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Newburyport is a small Merrimack River port town of about 17,000 people, 55 km northeast of Boston, with a compact brick downtown you can walk in an hour and a much larger natural area — Plum Island, the Parker River refuge and Maudslay State Park — a short drive away. It works as a one-night stop on a North Shore loop or as a Boston day trip by commuter rail, not as a multi-day base.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Downtown is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. For Plum Island, Maudslay and the refuge you need a car, bike or taxi — there is no useful local bus to the island. The MBTA Newburyport/Rockport commuter line ends here, so Boston is reachable without a car (check timetables).

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Plum Island and Parker River National Wildlife Refuge

go

Door to door: 20–30 min by car

Drive Route 1A north, then Plum Island Turnpike; about 6 km from Market Square

Refuge road, beach and Hellcat boardwalk; bring water and insect repellent.

Maudslay State Park

go

Door to door: 15 min by car

Drive Curzon Mill Road, about 5 km west of downtown

480 acres of meadows and riverbank; parking fee in season.

Door to door: 40–60 min by car

Drive I-95 and Route 128, or take the commuter rail and change at Beverly

Full-day trip; the train avoids Salem's summer parking problem, but there is no direct train from Newburyport.

Door to door: 45–60 min by car

Drive Route 128 or Route 127 along the coast

Harbour town with whale-watch boats of its own.

Rockport, Massachusetts

go

Door to door: 1 h by car

Drive Route 127, or the commuter rail to Rockport

Best as a full day; combine with Gloucester.

Door to door: 25–35 min by car

Drive Route 1A and Route 133

Half-day: Crane Beach and the Ipswich River walks.

Door to door: 45 min by car

Drive Route 127 south

Small and quiet; only worth the detour if you are already on the coast road.

Beverly, Massachusetts

caution

Door to door: 35–50 min

Commuter rail or Route 1A

Mostly a rail junction and a beach; skip unless you are changing trains.

Peabody, Massachusetts

skip

Door to door: 30 min by car

Drive Route 1 and I-95

Retail and business park; no reason to add it to a short trip.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / Market Square

Walk to dinner, the boardwalk and the museums; inns and small hotels, the priciest beds.

Water Street and the waterfront

River views and the Tannery Marketplace shops; still a short walk to the square.

Route 1 / Storey Avenue strip

Chain motels with free parking, a short drive from the centre (check); best value if you have a car.

Plum Island and Newbury

Beach and birding stays outside town; you need a car for everything, including dinner.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a US town of its size; the real risks are the Plum Island Turnpike at dusk (deer), cold water and rip currents on the refuge beaches, and unlit riverfront paths after dark.
  • Parker River refuge beach sections close in spring and summer for nesting piping plovers — check the refuge site before you drive out.
  • Maudslay State Park charges a parking fee in season; Massachusetts-registered cars pay less.
  • Summer weekends fill the downtown lots and Plum Island Turnpike; arrive before 10:00 or after 15:00.
  • Restaurant kitchens in town often stop serving by 21:00, earlier off-season.
  • Winter: some waterfront restaurants and tour boats close for the season.
