Corumbá sits on the Paraguay River against the Bolivia border and is one of the cheapest gateways into the Pantanal. The colonial core is small and walkable in half a day; the real reason to come is the wetland trips and the duty-free border zone at Puerto Quijarro. Two nights covers both without rushing.

Getting around

The centre is walkable; only Cristo Rei sits on a hill outside it. City buses run from the central terminal on Rua Tiradentes (blue gate, yellow turnstiles) and you can change lines free there. Line 102 goes to the Bolivia border, line 106 to the intercity bus station. Fares are R$3.50 by transit card or R$3.60 cash.

Watch out

Safety

Corumbá is a small, low-key city and the centre is fine by day. The real issues are an empty historic core after dark, wet-season road closures, and unlicensed Pantanal touts — book tours through a hotel or a known operator.
  • The historic centre is close to empty after dark; keep evening plans to Avenida General Rondon and the bar strip.
  • Border buses stop running in the late afternoon — no departures after about 18:00, so plan the Puerto Quijarro return before then.
  • Wet-season rain (Dec–Mar) can cut access roads to Pantanal lodges; confirm before booking.
  • Book Pantanal tours after comparing several operators in person — prices and itineraries vary widely.
