Wernigerode
Give Wernigerode one full day plus a night: the timber-framed old town is 2–3 hours on foot, the castle climb 30 min, and the steam railway to the Brocken eats the rest.
Wernigerode is a small Harz town of about 34,000 people with a compact medieval centre, a castle on the hill above it and the main depot of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways. Most travellers see the old town and castle in a day and use the town as a base for the Brocken and the northern Harz. Two nights is the useful minimum if you want a steam train day.

Getting around
The old town is walkable and cobbled; leave the car in a car park or meter bay near the centre. Harzer Verkehrsbetriebe (HVB) runs four town bus lines from the Rendezvous bus station on Ringstraße, roughly 06:00–19:00 weekdays and 09:00–17:30 weekends, with a limited night bus after about 19:00. The Harz Narrow Gauge Railways run from Wernigerode Hauptbahnhof and Westerntor.
