Agege is a Yoruba-speaking commercial suburb of about 460,000 people in Lagos State, roughly 11 km north of Ikeja and on the Abeokuta Express Road corridor. It has a commuter rail station, a stadium and busy markets, but almost nothing built for visitors. Treat it as a half-day errand stop from Ikeja or Ogba, not a place to sleep on a first Lagos trip.

Getting around

Buses and motorcycle taxis (okada) do the work; walking is fine on the main roads but there are few pavements. Fares inside Agege run about ₦100–150. The Lagos commuter rail line stops at Agege station, which is the fastest way in from the Ikeja or Yaba direction when it is running.

Watch out

Safety

Agege is a working suburb, not a tourist zone. Daytime errands are routine; after dark, use a car or a known ride-hailing app rather than walking or taking okada, and keep valuables out of sight in markets.
  • Street crime and pickpocketing in markets and at bus stops; carry a cheap phone and small cash.
  • Okada riding is the main injury risk: helmets are rarely offered, and traffic is aggressive.
  • Flooding closes low-lying roads in the rainy season, sometimes for hours.
