Fairfax City is a small independent city inside Fairfax County, 20 miles west of Washington DC, with a compact four-block Old Town, a 19th-century courthouse and a museum in an 1873 schoolhouse. Most travellers use it as a cheaper bed near the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metro stop, or stop for two hours on the way to Shenandoah. The big draws of the area — Tysons malls, Great Falls, Mount Vernon — sit outside the city line.

Getting around
Old Town is 4 blocks by 2 blocks and made for walking; park free and walk. Outside it, Fairfax is car country: US-50 and US-29 merge as Fairfax Boulevard, VA-123 and VA-236 (Main Street) cross the city, and I-66 runs along the edge. The CUE bus links George Mason University, the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metro station and points in the city; GMU students, staff and faculty ride free with ID. Metro does not enter the city.
