Washington is a small borough in Warren County, northwest New Jersey, on the Route 57 and Route 31 crossroads about 1 h 15 min west of Newark by car. It is a practical overnight stop for the Skylands and the Delaware Water Gap, not a destination in itself: two or three hours covers the centre, and most travellers use it as a bed between Hackettstown and Phillipsburg.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: sights are spread across the borough and the surrounding townships, and there is no useful local bus. NJ Transit runs trains on the Raritan Valley and Morris & Essex lines to High Bridge and Hackettstown, but neither station is in the borough, so plan a taxi or a lift from the station. Parking in the centre is free or cheap; the Route 31 commercial strip has large free lots.

Low-crime small-town New Jersey; the real risks are driving — deer at dusk, ice in winter, and unlit rural roads. Standard US precautions apply; 911 works everywhere.
  • No rail station in the borough: the nearest NJ Transit stops are High Bridge and Hackettstown, both a short drive away.
