  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Willits is a small Highway 101 town of about 4,900 people, 135 mi (about 3 h) north of San Francisco, where Highway 20 turns west to Fort Bragg. Downtown is a flat half-mile loop of shops, a 1930s cinema and a county museum; the draw for most travellers is the Skunk Train and a bed between the Bay Area and the redwoods. It works as a stop, not a destination week.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Downtown is walkable: the shop-and-gallery loop from the Heart of the Redwoods arch to the Center for the Arts is under half a mile on flat ground. For anything else you need a car — the Skunk Train depot, the museum and the motels on S. Main St are spread along the highway. The Mendocino Transit Authority runs the local Willits Rider route and regional buses; Greyhound stops at 1488 S Main St but sells no tickets there, so buy online.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Fort Bragg and the Mendocino coast

go

Door to door: About 45–55 min

Drive CA-20 west over the hills, about 35 mi

Go early: the coast fog often clears by late morning and the road is slow and winding.

Mendocino village

go

Door to door: About 1 h

CA-20 west to CA-1 north

Headlands walk plus a small village centre; pairs well with Fort Bragg in one day.

Ukiah

go

Door to door: About 40 min

US-101 south, about 35 mi

Bigger town for supplies, a wider choice of restaurants and county services.

Boonville and the Anderson Valley

go

Door to door: About 1 h

CA-253 east from Ukiah, or CA-128 via Cloverdale

Wineries and a small valley town; a half-day loop, not a full day.

Point Arena

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

CA-20 west, then CA-1 south

Lighthouse and cove; a long drive for a short visit unless you are working down the coast.

Gualala

overnight

Door to door: About 2 h

CA-1 south along the coast

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep on the coast instead.

Albion

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

CA-20 west, then CA-1 south

Small coastal stop; combine with Mendocino rather than making it the goal.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / South Main Street

Walk to shops, cafés and the Noyo Theatre; most motels line S. Main St along the highway.

Highway 20 / Blosser Lane side

Quieter cul-de-sac properties one turn off the highway; handy if you are heading west to Fort Bragg.

Watch out

Safety

Willits is a small, low-crime town and the usual risks are practical: highway traffic on Main Street, long drives on winding roads, summer heat inland and winter rain. Keep valuables out of sight in a parked car and carry water on Highway 20.
  • US-101 runs through town as Main Street: expect highway traffic and trucks, and cross with care.
  • Many small shops keep short or seasonal hours and some close on Sundays — check before you plan a shopping afternoon.
  • Summer afternoons inland can hit the high 30s °C; winter brings rain and occasional highway closures north of town.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on Highway 20 west toward Fort Bragg and on back roads.
