Seal Rocks is a tiny fishing village on a peninsula inside Myall Lakes National Park, about 3.5 h north of Sydney by car. Five beaches, the Sugarloaf Point lighthouse and whale watching from June to August are the whole draw. There is one general store, no public transport, and the nearest supermarket is 30 minutes away, so a car and a grocery stop are part of the trip.

Getting around

Walk inside the village: the store, Boat Beach and the lighthouse track are all within 15–20 minutes on foot. Drive for Number One Beach, Lighthouse Beach south end and Treachery Beach. Beach driving on Boat and Lighthouse beaches needs a permit from the general store and is for experienced 4WD drivers only.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a remote village; the real risks are surf rips, unpatrolled beaches, wildlife on the road at dusk and having no fuel or food within 30 minutes.
  • No public transport serves the village: bus 150 stops at Bungwahl, then you need a taxi or a lift.
  • One general store sells basics only; buy groceries at Raymond Terrace (from Sydney) or Tuncurry (from the north) before you arrive.
  • No fuel in the village: fill up before The Lakes Way turnoff.
  • Swim between the flags: Treachery and Lighthouse south end have strong rips in swell.
  • Stay back from the blowhole and the rocks near the lighthouse in big surf.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy; download maps and confirm your check-in details before you drive in.
