Abbeyleix is a small planned estate town in County Laois, 14 km south of Portlaoise, rebuilt on higher ground around 1790 after the old Cistercian settlement by the River Nore kept flooding. The M7/M8 bypass in 2010 ended its life as a bottleneck on the Dublin–Cork road, so it is now a quiet base for the Abbeyleix Bog boardwalk, a local history museum and the Lutyens garden at Heywood. Most travellers pass through; one night is enough, and a car makes the surrounding sights reachable.

The village centre is walkable in 10 minutes. The bog boardwalk starts just south of the Manor Hotel. Buses run to Portlaoise and Durrow, but Heywood Gardens, Donaghmore Workhouse and the castle ruins need a car or a bike.

- Bus frequencies are low: five M–Sa and two Sunday services on the Portlaoise route, so check the last return before you set out.
- The bog boardwalk is gravel with narrow bridges and is not fully accessible for wheelchairs or buggies.
- Abbeyleix House and its gardens open only for occasional events: do not plan a visit around them.
- Rural roads are narrow and unlit; drive on the left and watch for walkers on lanes.
