Chiltern

Give Chiltern half a day: the historic main street, the museum and the Yeddonba rock art. Sleep in Beechworth or Wangaratta, not here.

Chiltern is one of Victoria's oldest towns, on the Hume corridor between Wangaratta and Albury-Wodonga. Its gold-rush streetscape, small Athenaeum museum and the Yeddonba Aboriginal Cultural Site in Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park fill a half day. Almost nobody needs a night here: Beechworth, 25 minutes away, has the beds and the food.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

You need a car. The main street is walkable in 10 minutes, but the Yeddonba site and the national park are a short drive out of town. V/Line trains stop at Chiltern station on the Melbourne–Albury line, but there is no local bus to the park.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet country town and safe to walk by day. The real risks are summer heat and fire danger, wildlife on the roads at dawn and dusk, and long gaps between fuel and food stops.
  • Summer heat: 35 °C (95 °F)+ days are common in Jan–Feb and total fire ban days close the national park.
  • Kangaroos and wombats on the roads at dawn and dusk.
  • Very limited food after mid-afternoon: the bakery closes at 4PM and the pub kitchen hours vary.
  • Phone signal is patchy in the Chiltern-Mt Pilot park.
