Abingdon-on-Thames

Give Abingdon half a day to one night: County Hall, the abbey ruins and a Thames-side walk. Base in Oxford and come by bus, or sleep here for the fairs.

Abingdon-on-Thames is a market town on the Thames about 7 miles south of Oxford, with a population of roughly 33,000. It was the county town of Berkshire until 1870 and moved to Oxfordshire in the 1974 reorganisation. The centre is small enough to walk in an hour; the draw is the 17th-century County Hall, the remains of a Benedictine abbey, the river, and two street fairs each October. Most visitors see it as a half-day from Oxford or a quiet one-night stop.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes; County Hall, the abbey buildings and the river are all within 10 minutes of the Market Place. Buses link Abingdon with Oxford, Didcot and nearby villages; routes and times are published by Oxfordshire County Council and OxonTime. National Cycle Route 5 and the Hanson Way pass through town, with Oxford about 9 miles north and Didcot about 15 miles south. Salter's Steamers run river trips from Oxford's Folly Bridge in the May–September season.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (Market Place, Bridge Street, Ock Street)

Walk to County Hall, the abbey site and the river in under 10 minutes; pubs and restaurants on the doorstep. Few rooms, so book ahead for fair weekends.

Oxford Road / north side

Guest houses and B&Bs along the road into town, about 10–15 min walk from the Market Place; quieter, with parking easier than in the centre.

Marcham Road / A34 edge

Chain-style hotel and supermarket side of town; free parking and quick A34 access, but a 20–25 min walk or short drive to the centre.

Oxford (as a base)

More beds, more buses and trains; Abingdon works as a half-day or evening trip from Oxford rather than a base of its own.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime market town; the practical risks are traffic on the A34 and Bridge Street, dark towpaths and riverside paths after rain, and drinking to excess on fair nights. Standard UK precautions apply.
  • No train station in town: the nearest is Radley, and both Radley and Oxford need a bus connection to reach the centre.
  • The Michaelmas Fair closes Ock Street, High Street and the Market Place for two days in early October, with the Runaway Fair about a week later; roads and parking are affected.
  • Bun Throwing is not on a fixed calendar: it happens only when the town council votes to hold one, usually for a royal occasion.
  • County Hall roof access is a small paid extra on top of free museum entry, and opening hours are limited; check before you go.
  • River levels and towpath conditions change after heavy rain; boat hire is seasonal.
