Belturbet is a small River Erne town of about 1,600 people in County Cavan, 123 km from Dublin and 4 km from the Northern Ireland border. Boating and angling are the reasons to come; the town itself is a Diamond, a church, a restored railway station museum and a handful of pubs. Without a boat or a rod, it is a short stop on the N3, not a base.

A quiet, low-crime rural town; the real risks are narrow roads, unlit lanes after dark and river or lake water if you are boating or angling without a life jacket.
  • The border is 4 km north and unpatrolled, but your passport and vehicle documents must be valid for both jurisdictions.
  • The Bawnboy workhouse is derelict: approach with caution.
