Longlac

Stop for one night if you are driving Highway 11 or riding The Canadian; there is no reason to build a trip around Longlac.

Longlac is a town of a couple of thousand people in Greenstone, northern Ontario, and one of only two places in the province on both the Trans-Canada Highway and The Canadian rail line. It is a fuel, food and bed stop between Thunder Bay and Hearst, with a waterfront, a gold-rush past and a winter carnival. One night covers it; the surrounding bush and the rail line are the real draw.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet town with no real street crime problem. The genuine risks are the drive (moose at dusk, winter ice, long gaps between fuel) and the distance to a hospital.
  • Fuel up before leaving: the next gas eastbound is in Hearst, about 208 km (129 mi) away.
  • The nearest hospital is in Geraldton, about 40 km (25 mi) west; plan for that gap.
  • Winter brings long, very cold spells and highway closures; check road conditions before driving.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on Highway 11 outside town.
