Salto
Give Salto one night, two if you want a full Daymán thermal day: it is a river city with hot springs, not a sightseeing stop.

- South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
- South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
- South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
- Uruguay ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Uruguay's Ministry of Foreign Affairs or a Uruguayan consulate; ferry passengers from Buenos Aires clear both countries' immigration at the terminal.
- Uruguay ↗Buenos Aires–Colonia and Buenos Aires–Montevideo ferries sell out on long weekends and in summer: book ahead.
- Uruguay ↗Pay restaurants, hotels and car hire with a foreign-issued card: non-residents get the 22% VAT (IVA) removed on restaurants and car hire roughly 15 November – 30 April, and on lodging — check the current season's rules.
Salto sits on the east bank of the Río Uruguay, about 100,000 people, in Uruguay's citrus belt and directly across from Concordia, Argentina. Almost everything a visitor does here is water-related: the Costanera riverside walk, the Daymán hot springs 6 km south, and the Salto Grande dam 20 km north. The city itself is a working provincial capital with a pedestrian shopping street and a small historic core, so plan around the springs and the river rather than the town.

City buses run to Daymán every hour on the half hour along Calle Brasil (about 25 min); the same route serves the springs and the water park. Taxis and remises cover the centre cheaply; the bus terminal is attached to Salto Shopping on Av. José Batlle y Ordóñez.

Watch out
Safety
- The Muelle Negro dock has holes from water damage: watch your step, especially after dark.
- The cross-border bus to Concordia, Argentina does not run on Sundays; the only option then is a taxi.
- Summer afternoons on the Costanera are hot and exposed: carry water and shade.
- Zoo conditions are basic; go only if you accept that.
- Bus and spring timetables change with the season: confirm locally before you rely on a late return.
