Erice is a medieval hilltop town on Monte Erice, 750 m above Trapani and the coast, about 100 km from Palermo. The walled centre is compact and steep: cobbled lanes, the Castle of Venus on the old Temple of Venus site, the Elymian-Punic walls, a dense run of churches and the Ettore Majorana science institutes in former convents. Most visitors come up from Trapani by cable car or bus for a few hours; one night buys you the quiet after the day-trippers leave and the lights of Trapani below.

Getting around

On foot only inside the walls: the centre is compact but steep, with cobbles and few ramps. The cable car (funivia) links Casa Santa in Trapani to the historic centre in about 10 min. Local AST and Trapani city buses run to the summit but less often than to the lower districts; the drive up SP31/SP3 is winding. Parking sits near Porta Trapani and by the Church of John the Baptist.

Watch out

Safety

Erice is a small, low-crime hill town and safe for tourists by day and evening. The real risks are the steep cobbles, the cable car stopping in wind, and winter mist on the drive up.
  • Cobbles and gradients are hard on knees and unsuitable for wheelchairs; wear grippy shoes.
  • The cable car closes in strong winds and runs shorter hours in winter: check before relying on it.
  • Buses to the hilltop centre are infrequent outside summer: check the timetable the day before.
  • Restaurants in the centre are tourist-priced; the better-value meals are down in Trapani.
  • Mist and cloud can swallow the summit in winter, hiding the views you came for.
