Charleville is a service town of about 3,000 people on the Warrego, 750 km west of Brisbane, and it earns a stop for two things you cannot do in the city: a night session with bilbies at the breeding centre, and telescope viewing at the Cosmos Centre under a dark outback sky. Everything else — the Flying Doctor base, the School of the Air, the historic house — is small, cheap and takes under an hour each. There is no public transport, so book a car before you arrive or plan on flat-fee taxis.

Getting around

No public transport. Budget and Avis are the only rental agencies and both ship cars in, so reserve before you arrive; Budget sits at the airport, Avis at a town-centre agency and will meet you at the airport on request. Taxis charge a flat town fare with more for the airport or Cosmos Centre. Blocks are large and the heat is real: walking to the Cosmos Centre, Flying Doctor base or bilby centre is 30–45 minutes each way.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet town and safe to walk by day. The real risks are heat, long empty drives and wildlife on the road at dusk — carry water, fuel early and avoid driving after dark.
  • Book the observatory session ahead; outback nights April–September are cold, so bring a jacket.
  • Bilby tours run only 1 Apr–15 Oct, on set nights; nothing mid-Oct to 31 Mar.
  • The School of the Air tour is one departure a day and does not run in public or Queensland school holidays.
  • Supermarkets shut by 7pm weekdays and 4pm weekends; the town is quiet after 5pm.
  • Mobile coverage is Telstra and Optus only — Vodafone has none.
  • Long drives between towns: fuel up before leaving and carry water.
