San Bernardino
Use San Bernardino as a 1-night Route 66 stop or a car base for the mountains — not a sightseeing city: 2 nights max, and only with a car.
San Bernardino is the largest city in San Bernardino County and a freeway junction on I-10, I-215 and I-210, about 60 mi east of Los Angeles. Downtown is quiet and the draw is thin — the site of the first McDonald's stand, a Route 66 motel and the San Bernardino Mountains 30–45 minutes up the road. Most travellers sleep here for one night between Los Angeles and Joshua Tree, or skip the city and go straight to Big Bear Lake or Lake Arrowhead.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the practical way: I-10, I-215 and I-210 cross the city and almost everything is a drive. Omnitrans runs local buses from the Downtown Transit Center, Metrolink's San Bernardino Line reaches Los Angeles Union Station, and Mountain Transit goes up to Lake Arrowhead, Running Springs and Big Bear Lake. Rideshare works downtown but waits grow at night.

Historic downtown and the trailhead for Mount Baldy; little reason to go without a specific plan.

Hospitality Lane (I-10, south side)
Chain hotels at the I-10/Hospitality Lane exits; easiest with a car and the safest default for a family stop.
Downtown / Santa Fe Depot
Walk to the Metrolink and Amtrak depot and the transit centre; budget motels, quieter at night, few restaurants.
Route 66 / Foothill Blvd (west, toward Rialto)
The Wigwam Motel and older roadside motels; car needed, some blocks are run-down.
University Parkway / north (I-215)
Motels near Cal State San Bernardino and the I-215 exit; handy for the mountains and for CSUSB.
