Toruń is a Gothic brick town on the Vistula between Warsaw and Gdańsk, with a UNESCO-listed Old Town that survived the war intact. It is small, walkable and cheap, and it rewards food and slow wandering more than a checklist of sights. Most trips use it as a one-night stop on the Warsaw–Gdańsk rail line.

Getting around

The Old Town is small and public transport does not enter it: walk. Buses and trams cover the rest; buy a ticket from a kiosk or a machine on board, and stamp it immediately. Taxis are cheap. A car costs about 100 zł a day if you want the forts or the countryside.

Watch out

Safety

Toruń is a calm, safe city; the real risks are pickpockets in the market square in summer, unlit riverbank paths after dark, and cold snaps in winter.
  • Toruń Główny station is across the river: 35 min on foot, or buses 22 and 27 to Plac Rapackiego. Toruń Miasto is much closer if your train stops there.
  • Ticket inspectors work in plain clothes and board crowded buses: stamp your ticket within seconds of boarding.
  • Some Old Town Hall exhibits are labelled in Polish only; the tower view is the reason to go up.
  • Check opening days: several museums close on Mondays.
