Trogir is a small walled island town 25 km west of Split, on the UNESCO list for its Romanesque and Renaissance core. You can walk the whole old town in about 20 minutes, so the value is in sleeping there: mornings and evenings are empty, midday is coach groups. Split Airport is 5 km away, which makes it a smart first or last night of a Dalmatian trip.

Getting around

The old town is a car-free island you cross on foot in about 20 minutes; two bridges link it to the mainland and Čiovo. Local bus 37 runs to Split and the airport. Park on the mainland — driving onto the island is pointless.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a tourist town; the real risks are summer heat, uneven stone steps, and swimming near boat lanes. Watch bags in the packed midday square.
  • Old-town island is almost entirely car-free: park on the mainland and walk in.
  • Day-trip coaches fill the streets roughly 10:00–16:00; plan the cathedral and castle outside that window.
  • Summer midday heat on the stone is real: carry water and use the riva shade.
  • Restaurant terraces on the main square cost more than places one street back.
