Whitewood is a town of about 860 people at the junction of Highway 1 (Trans-Canada) and Highway 9, 175 km east of Regina and 190 km west of Brandon. It is a rest stop, not a destination: four downtown murals, a 40-building museum village, a small historical museum and a handful of places to eat and sleep. Plan a short break, or one night if you are splitting the Regina–Winnipeg drive.

- The Regina–Winnipeg stretch has long gaps between services: fuel up in Whitewood before heading east or west.
- Winter driving on Highway 1 can close in blowing snow; check the provincial highway conditions before you set out.
